Abstract:
Objective: To analysis the use of non-prescribed hormones among travestis and transgender women (TGW), in the city of Salvador-Bahia-BrazilMethods: This is a cross-sectional study using the RDS (Respondent Driven Sampling) methodology to recruit travestis and TGW between 2014 and 2016, in the city of Salvador and in the Metropolitan Region. A comparative analysis was carried out between sociodemographic, behavioral and gender declaration conditions, with the use of hormones. Data weighted by the RDS-II estimator. Statistical analyzes performed with the Stata program version 14.
Results: 127 participants recruited. Of this group, 69.1% of participants used non-prescribed hormones. The non-prescribed use of hormones was associated with the use of industrial liquid silicone (OR 1,27; 95% IC 0,35-4,53) and with body satisfaction (OR 1,15; 95% IC 0,31-4,31). The travestis and TGW were comfortable with the penis and have sex and pleasure with the penis used less hormone. The HIV-seropositive participants, there was a higher proportion of hormone use.
Conclusion: It is likely that the use of hormones is associated with better satisfaction with body self-image among Travestis and TGW. Use in large quantities has been found, probably because it causes little access to public health services.
