Abstract:

The objective was to assess the frequency of use of potentially inappropriate medications for elderly by community-dwelling older people and analyze the clinical significance. It is a retrospective cross-sectional study, part of a drug utilization study conducted in a public hospital. Medications inappropriate for the elderly were classified using the three groups of explicit criteria included in Beers List 2012. There were included 190 older people and the prevalence for inappropriate drugs use was 44.2%. The most frequent therapeutic classes of inappropriate medication used were NSAIDs, cardiovascular, benzodiazepines and antidepressants. Positives associations between use of inappropriate drugs and polypharmacy, polipatologia and hypertension were identified. In RENAME 2013 were identified 35 (34.3%) inappropriate drugs. The study showed a high prevalence of inappropriate medication use for elderly by community-dwelling older people. The clinical consequences of using inappropriate medication are important to public health because of the risk of adverse events and negatively affect the elderly functionality. In elderly care is important to develop actions to promove the rational use of medicines.
