Abstract:
Families have been experiencing changes in their size, structure, and composition. Among new family arrangements, stands out the growth of female single-parent families. This arrangement tends to be in a situation of greater social vulnerability in relation to other arrangements. Therefore, this study intended to analyze the relationship between this arrangement and anthropometric measures of the children under five years, with datathe 2008-2009Brazilian household budget survey (POF/IBGE).We estimated two equations for the analysis of anthropometric measures, with the z-score of “height-for-age” and z-score of \"weight-for-height\" as dependent variables. Our results showed that, controlling for other important variables such as income, education and domestic characteristics, belong to the \"single-parent female\" arrangement had a positive effect on the anthropometric measures when compared to the \"couple with children\" arrangement, indicating that in households the mother does not have the presence of the spouse, children had better health indicators than in households the spouse is present.
