Abstract:
Since the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy in 1996, it has been observed worldwide changes in the cause of hospitalization in patients with HIV/AIDS. The objective this study was describes the and analyzes the trends and characteristics of hospitalizations of patients with HIV/AIDS for the period 1997-2012. This was a cross-sectional study that uses the database of Center Hospital Data that concentrates all records of hospitalizations in 31 hospitals, public and private, in 26 counties in the São Paulo state/Brazil. To verify the association between variables was employed prevalence ratio (PR) and their confidence intervals at 95% (95%CI). During the study period, 10,696 admissions among 9797 adults and children, or 1.09 hospitalizations per patient were recorded, 62% were male, with predominant age group of 21 to 50 years old (63.5%). Considering all age groups, mortality was higher among male patients [PR 1.42 (95% CI:1.28 to 1.57); p <0.05]. Infectious diseases were the main causes for hospitalizations, representing 54.5% of the total. It was noted that there is still a predominance of infectious diseases (opportunistic or not), as causes of hospitalization in patients with HIV/AIDS, even in the post HAART era. Important differences in variables such as the death between the sexes and ages of the patients were noted.
