Resumo:

Each year millions of people are affected by natural and manmade disasters around the world. More than 2.5 million people have found themselves homeless, economically impacted, or injured because of these disasters. Indeed, disasters would not be ‘disastrous‘ if it were not for their effect on the human population.
The health consequences of natural disasters are complex. The Health Sector must be organized to prepare for, mitigate against, respond to, and recover from a myriad of potential disasters. This paper will explore the various potential health impacts of disasters, the components of the health sector and their roles in emergency and disaster health, as well as the coordination and organization necessary within the system to best meet the health needs of a population in a disaster.
