From Black Cats to Mass Narcissism

Abstract:
Digital display media have been reached the status of a ubiquitous presence in the existence of billions of individuals around the globe. In parallel, several studies point to the emergence of a depressive pandemic (predecessor to COVID-19) as a layer of psychopathological instability among adults and adolescents. The present review highlights links between psychic conditions explored by exhibition media from the perspective of cultural elements increasingly present in contemporary society. The aim is to highlight a genealogy that starts from the psychic constitution of individuals, implying technological mediations incident to the process of formation of subjectivities. Uncritical exposure devices, disseminate templates for personas that, in the collective dimension, constitute mass narcissism. The concept is described here by distinctive cultural traits: indifference to other people's issues; demand for immediate gratification; boredom intolerance; inability to sublimate desires; disbelief in the future; disconnection with the past; and political indifference. Failures in the support processes of narcissistic Egos, shake psychic structures due to the feeling of emptiness and inconsistency, threatening the notion of identity and value. Under such circumstances, individuals give in to the “wild apathy” of a pulverized society, glorifying the economy of envy under the rule of the pure Ego. We concluded that mass narcissism supports and gives substance to digital media of insidious and self-generated control, which socialize by desocializing by enabling and praising interactions without relationality.
