Abstract:

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) emerged as a science only after the 70’s with the energetic crisis and consequently, with the sealed buildings (without natural ventilation). Initially, it’s occurred chiefly in development countries but soon spread out around the world because the low air changes as the responsible for the arising of biologic and non-biologic pollutants. It’s known that ventilation is the cause for the bad air quality in indoor environments and their occupants contribute to this by their activities. Besides, the bad indoor air quality is associated to some diseases (cough, rhinitis, allergy, etc.) and to sick building syndrome (SBS), where the occupants develop symptoms with an unknown origin. To sample the indoor contaminants we have several methodologies like: passive sampling, active sampling and automatic systems. To get a healthy indoor environment is needed to associate specific regulations with researches and awareness of the occupants in these places. This review focus on relationship among the indoor air pollutants, their effects and sampling methodologies.
Key words: Air pollution; indoor air quality; sick building syndrome.
