The importance
The feature of Revista Ciência & Saúde Coletiva within the diverse journals in the area is its thematic approach. The idea of creating a journal with this unique characteristic is associated with the purpose of ABRASCO of promoting, enhancing and socializing academic discussions and debates among peers on relevant topics, following up the historical development of public health in Brazil. A thematic issue usually contains the following categories of scientific reports: (1) ten original articles on a specific topic covering different aspects, the majority of these must result from scientific investigation; (2) out of these ten articles one might be an interview or an opinion, addressing the experience of someone who intellectually masters the topic; (3) one or more reviews on books about the topic at hand.
Types
The thematic issues are currently listed according to four different types of demand:
• By Reference Term sent by professors; researchers from the area of collective health (spontaneously or suggested by the chief-editors) when a deeper understanding of a specific topic is considered important.
• By Reference Term sent by coordinators of a comprehensive and original investigation that is relevant to the field, with results presented as articles, according to norms previously described. In the first two categories, the Reference term is analyzed regarding its scientific merit and relevance by the Associated Editors of the journal.
• By Public Call announced on the page of the journal, and under coordination of Guest Editors. In this case, they accumulate the task of selecting the articles according to the scope and then have them evaluated by peer reviewers.
• By Internal Organization of the Chief-Editors gathering under an appropriate title, articles of free demand within the aforementioned criteria.
What must be included in the Reference Term
The Reference Term must contain: (1) title (even if a temporary title) of the proposal of the thematic issue; (2) name (or names) of the Guest Editor; (3) short explanation not longer than two paragraphs regarding the proposal addressing objectives, context, significance and relevance for Collective Health; (4) a list containing ten proposed articles with the name of invited authors, including the opinion text or interview; (5) Suggestion of one or two reviews of books on the theme.
Warning and recommendation
Warning: According to a decision by the editors, the same author, as the first or collaborating author, cannot submit more than three articles for a thematic issue.
Recommendation – The organizers are advised to present contributions from international collaborators and from authors who work with the topic and are from different national institutions. As of 2014, the authors are advised to present the article in Portuguese and English, and the translation into English must be done by a translator accredited by the journal. The text in English will be published just online.
