Launched at the end of 1996 and edited by the Brazilian Association of Collective Health/ABRASCO, the Revista Ciência & Saúde Coletiva is a scientific forum for discussions, debates, research presentations, showcase of new ideas and controversies in the area. Since inception, the Revista Ciência & Saúde Coletiva fully complies with the requirements of scientific publication periodicity and standardization, according to the rules set forth by the Vancouver Convention, which are usually applicable to medicine and public health.
Articles are submitted through a submission platform accessible through the Journal's website (https://cienciaesaudecoletiva.com.br/). After submission, articles undergo a standards review and, if found to have no outstanding issues, are sent to one of the editors-in-chief for a preliminary scoping review. Articles that pass the initial review are sent to associate editors, who conduct peer review. At least two researchers in the field are invited to evaluate the article. Approved articles are placed in press on the Journal's website (in a topic called ahead of print, being released but not finalized) and await publication/indexing in Scielo and the databases, in order of arrival and availability of the Journal. For publication, all articles undergo an anti-plagiarism program called Plagius Professional, which also detects the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The use of artificial intelligence in the Journal is accepted in a maximum of 20% of the text and authors must mention it in the methodological description, stating at which stage of the article it was used.
Since 2011, Ciência & Saúde Coletiva has been published monthly, in addition to occasionally publishing supplements. The Journal's specialty is to publish themed issues on topics relevant to Collective Health, as well as disseminate texts of importance to the sector, under topics called "free themes"; "reviews"; "opinions"; and "reviews and letters."
RC&SC has been indexed in SciELO since 2002; in PubMed since 2007; in Web of Science since 2009; and, more recently, in Scopus. Its gradual growth has been accompanied by the participation of authors from all Brazilian states and internationally, the latter even more modestly (20%). The main foreign contributors are Portuguese, Spanish, American, and Latin American authors. Since 2021, RC&SC has been published exclusively online, generally in Portuguese and English. Article abstracts in Spanish have also been incorporated since 2024. Although officially online, the Journal can be printed at the request of guest editors of a thematic issue, but the costs of this process must be covered by them. Readers have full access to publications on the homepage www.cienciasaudecoletiva.com.br, which in turn links to the link www.scielo.br/j/csc/grid. This database provides access to the content of all issues of the Journal since 1996.
