Abstract:

The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of overweight and associated factors in women of reproductive age living in a low-income community. Cross sectional study whose sample consisted of 663 women, aged 15 to 49 years old, living in the Coelhos’s neighborhood at Recife city – State of Pernambuco. BMI-for-age was used to classify the nutritional status of women aged 15 to 19 years, adopting ≥ +1 Z-score to define overweight. For women older than 19 years old, it was adopted BMI ≥ 25.0 kg/m2. Socioeconomic, demographic and reproductive variables were analyzed as possible factors associated to overweight. The prevalence of overweight was observed in two thirds of women (66.3%). The results of the Poisson multiple regression analysis showed a significantly higher prevalence of overweight in women with advancing chronological age, lower menarche age, who had three or more pregnancies, cohabiting with their partner, and calling themselves black or white. The multiparity was the only factor associated with overweight that could be modified, which reinforces the need to highlight the importance of prenatal services and family planning in their prevention and control.
