Foram utilizados dados do ELSI-Brasil, conduzido em amostra nacional da população com 50 anos ou mais, com o objetivo de examinar a presença de códigos garbage (CG) como causa de morte no Sistema de Informações sobre Mortalidade (SIM) e sua associação com características sociodemográficas e de saúde pré-existentes. Foram identificados 872 óbitos entre os 9.412 participantes da linha de base da coorte, dos quais 29,1% foram classificados como CG. Por meio de regressão de Poisson ajustada por idade e/ou sexo, observou-se que idade (RP [Razão de Prevalência] 1,45; IC 95% 1,04-2,01 e RP=1,46; IC 95% 1,05- 2,03, para 70-79 e 80+ anos, respectivamente), raça/cor parda (RP= 1,27; IC 95% 1,01-1,61), diagnóstico médico prévio de acidente vascular cerebral (RP = 1,53; IC 95% 1,21-1,94) e limitação funcional (RP = 1,41; IC 95% 1,34-1,73) foram associados ao registro de CG. Esses resultados sugerem que ações voltadas para identificar a cadeia de eventos que resultam no acidente vascular cerebral e/ou na limitação funcional podem ter impacto na melhora do registro da causa básica do óbito entre adultos brasileiros mais velhos.

Datathe ELSI-Brazil, conducted on a national sample of the population aged 50 or over, were used with the aim objective of examining the presence of garbage codes (CG) as a cause of death in the Mortality Information System (SIM) and their association with pre-existing sociodemographic and health characteristics. 872 deaths were identified among the 9,412 baseline participants in the cohort, of which 29.1% were classified as GC. Using Poisson regression adjusted for age and/or sex, it was observed that age (PR [Prevalence Ratio] 1.45; 95% CI 1.04-2.01 and PR=1.46; 95% CI 1.05- 2.03, for 70-79 and 80+ years, respectively), race/brown color (RP= 1 .27; 95% CI 1.01-1.61), previous medical diagnosis of stroke (PR = 1.53; 95% CI 1.21-1.94) and functional limitation (PR = 1.41; CI 95 % 1.34-1.73) were associated with GC registration. These results suggest that actions aimed at identifying the chain of events that result in stroke and/or functional limitation may have an impact on improving the recording of the underlying cause of death among older Brazilian adults.
