Abstract:
Being overweight is a growing problem in Brazil, including in children. Family influence has shown strong determination in the adoption of health-related behaviors, including diet quality, which affects the nutritional status of schoolchildren. The research objective was to evaluate the association of socioeconomic, demographic, health-related behaviors and characteristics of the home environment with the prevalence of overweight among students from 1st to 5th grade school in the city of Itajaí, Santa Catarina. Socioeconomic and demographic variables were identified through a questionnaire administered to parents/ guardians. Nutritional status was determined by body mass index and waist circumference. The association between excess weight and other variables was investigated using the chi - square test, and test for linear trend. The population consisted of 417 children, 95,2% of the sample. The data suggest that 44% of children were overweight, which was associated with: best quality of the diet (49,4%, p=0,051), lower frequency of consumption of snack foods (p=0,001), meals habit of doing in front of the television (p= 0,039), overweight parents (51%, p=0,002), the score of the family nutrition and physical activity in children (51,9%, p=0,029**). The results suggest the importance of including parents in educational activities, making them to adopt healthier lifestyles.
