1653/2011 - EXERCÍCIOS FÍSICOS, FORÇA MUSCULAR E ATIVIDADES DE VIDA DIÁRIA EM MULHERES IDOSAS PHYSICAL EXERCISE, MUSCLE STRENGTH AND ACTIVITIES OF FUNCTIONAL ABILITY IN COMMUNITY-DWELLING ELDERLY WOMEN

Abstract:
Objective: To investigate relationships between muscle strength of upper and lower extremities, physical exercises, and functionality to perform complex activities of daily life in community-dwelling elderly women. Methods: 1538 women with mean age = 72.07 ± 5.46 and average household income = 3.59 ±3.96 MW, without cognitive deficit suggestive of dementia, were submitted to measures of grip strength and walking speed and to self-report items on regular practice of physical exercise and performance of 13 social AADL (ex: working, travelling and church attendance) and 3 IADL (money, shopping and transportation). Results: According with the criteria of the American College of Sports Medicine, 60.4% were sedentary; 17.21% had low grip strength and 16.43%, low gait speed; 54.32% scored below the sample´s median of ADL performance. Among those aged 80 and above there were higher frequencies of sedentary life style and low grip strength, gait speed and functionality in ADL. Low grip strength and low gait speed predicted worse performance in ADL (OR = 2,48 if both; OR = 1,66 if either were present), as well as low income (OR = 2,46 to income < 1 MW and = 2,45 to 1,1 and 3,0 MW) and sedentary life style (OR = 2,08). Conclusion: Elderly women have their functionality influenced by physiological aging, but also by contextual conditions and life style.
