Abstract:
Adversity in childhood, health risk behaviors and psychopathology are a extremely prevalent phenomena in inmate population, with strong impact on health. Knowing the differences between sexes, in what concerns these variables, has a major importance in a way that it is possible to adequate the intervention strategies in a prison context. Administrating the Social-demographic and Life History Questionnaire and the Brief Symptoms Inventory, we intended adverse childhood experiences and relate them to health risk behaviors and with psychopathological symptoms, and study the differences between the 65 male and 42 female detain in Portugal. Men and women describe a complex frame of several adverse experiences during their young age. In a range of ten possible categories, we verified a medium value of 5.05 (DP=2.63) in total adversity for women and 2.63 (DP=2.18) for men, being the prevalence significantly higher within female population (Z=-4.33; p=.000). It was also found a high prevalence of health risk behaviors and psychopathological symptoms in both groups, being this last higher in female. We conclude that the differences between men and women should be profoundly studied in order to guided the highly necessity to adequate the intervention projects in specific populations.
