Abstract:
A descriptive study of series that aimed to assess mortality from external causes in resident men of Minas Gerais, in the period 1999 to 2008, identifying the behavior of this group of causes throughout the series. Data were obtained from the Mortality Information System and male resident population in Minas Gerais was obtained from the SUS Departament. We calculated mortality rates per 100 000 inhabitants, divided by age group and specific cause. We used simple linear regression model to check the tendency of male deaths during the study period. It was found an increase in male mortality in all years of the study period, passing from 82.7 deaths/100 000 in 1999 to 95.7 deaths/100 000 in 2008, representing a 15.7% increase in risk of death from external causes. Young adults (20-39 years) were more affected by external causes. In relation to traffic accidents, there is increased of mortality rates, especially between 2000 to 2007. The rates of suicide and homicide also elevated in the period. In conclusion, it is necessary to adopt preventive measures, because men are subject to external causes, in order to contribute to the inclusion of specific aspects of the educational programs for its prevention.
