Abstract:

The way we mould and socially present our body has an extraordinary social importance: appearance is our first business cardwhich people frame and judge us. This evaluation ends up conditioning our daily life, our social opportunities to our professional ones. One of the most important criteria for determining whether a person is healthy and beautiful - in Portugal, as in many other contexts - is thinness. In a society thinness and physical perfection are ideals to pursue, this article explores, through qualitative methodologies, the impact of the discourse linked to the problem of obesity caused by the Covid-19 pandemic on the multiplication and exacerbation of conflicts related to the body in Portuguese women between 18 and 65 years old.
