0070/2016 - Aranãs do médio Jequitinhonha: aspectos socioeconômicos, demográficos e sanitários de uma população indígena desaldeada The Aranã from medium Jequitinhonha: socioeconomic, demographic and sanitary aspects of a landless indigenous population

Abstract:
The lack of epidemiological and environmental data about Brazilian indigenous populations is still a challenge for the government. This informational deficit becomes larger regarding indigenous living outside indigenous lands and or reservations. From this perspective, we considered relevant to characterize the Aranã, a landless indigenous group, living in Minas Gerais, Brazil, focusing demographic, socioeconomic and sanitary aspects. A household survey was conducted. Collected data were analyzed and compared with those from other national indigenous groups. Results showed similarities between our data and those from the 2010 Brazilian census related to national indigenous population, mostly to those living outside indigenous lands or reservations. Disparities were identified within the households, mainly sanitarian ones, which suggested relation with the location. This result indicates the need to implement interventions targeting indigenous living in rural areas, bringing to light the old discussion about rural and urban disparities. In addition, we suggest that the institute responsible for the national census should improve its assessment methods concerning landless indigenous, once there were identified discrepancies between our data and theirs, towards the number of counted Aranã individuals.
