Resumo:

In developed countries, violence has been the main cause of maxillofacial injuries (LBMF). In Brazil, there is little evidence of such lesions, especially in the poorest regions, and to explore gender differences and the involvement of the soft tissues. This study aimed to characterize the LBMF resultingphysical assault on a capital of northeast Brazil and analyze gender differences. 15847 reports of the Forensic Medicine Institute of São Luís / MA, which occurred in 2012 were investigated. Were collected socioeconomic, demographic data and characteristics of LBMF. We used the Chi-square and Fisher exact tests to assess gender differences (? = 5%). Technical inspection of cases, 1977 (12.47%) were LBMF. Victims of female (56.30%), 20-59 years old (85.51%), brown color (82.09%), without a partner (67.98%) and employed (70.73%) were most affected. Type lesions ecchymosis, in buccinator and lip, regions arisingthe use of blunt instruments, causing permanent functional impairment were most prevalent in women (P
