Abstract:
Post-COVID condition (PCC) is characterized by the persistence of symptoms following acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. This scoping review aimed to identify and compile scientific evidence on biomarkers associated with PCC to elucidate its pathophysiology and support clinical diagnosis and management. A systematic search was conducted in six databases (PubMed, Scopus, SciELO, BVS, Embase, and ScienceDirect), selecting original studies published between May 2020 and April 2024. Observational studies investigating clinical and prognostic biomarkers in PCC patients were included. After applying eligibility criteria, 10 studies were selected. The most frequently reported biomarkers were interleukins IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8, proteins associated with persistent inflammation and immune dysfunction. Other relevant markers included D-dimer, C-reactive protein (CRP), VEGF-A, and matrix metalloproteinases. Results highlight that inflammatory biomarkers play a key role in characterizing and monitoring PCC. It is concluded that identifying accessible biomarkers, easily integrated into clinical practice, can aid in developing more effective diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
