Abstract:

This study focuses on the theoretical references that have influenced school health programs in Brazil, based on the experience in Rio de Janeiro. The authors draw on the Brazilian literature from the mid-20th century until 2014 and the international literature on health promotion evaluation. They analyze the proposals for domestication of student behavior using hygienist principles, projects for the creation of a specific health course in the school syllabus, and still others with a clinical or healthcare perspective. Covering a more recent period, the study analyzes how the health and educational systems resumed their collaboration in a health promotion model. The article demonstrates the importance of different theoretical references for understanding actions and strategies summarized in an inter-sector framework. It also explains the influence of historical contexts in which the dialogue occurs between education and health and the definition of actions in the challenging link between practices and knowledge involving the two sectors.
