Abstract:

This is a peer review study on abortion and social stigma that analyses the potential of stigma category for abortion care in Brazil. We used the method of integrative review to access scientific data base systems, choosing not set time limit to the search We analyzed 65 publications focused on the social representations for women who had an abortion and professional who attended them; explored the obstacles for the application of abortion protocols and technical norms after the reviewing law process that contribute to increase the access to quality care services. The conceptual relevance of Erving Goffman was a key element for the understanding of the gender transgression stereotypes, the imperative of motherhood, sexual purity, which marks women who have abortions as inferior, damaged: promiscuous, sinful, murderous. Stigma most affected groups were identified: women having an abortion, health professionals. The women conflicts due to the duality of keeping secret/reveal their abortions, the professional’s conscientious objection and the obstacles faced on the implementation of public policies emerged from the study. Better understand of the stigma role may contribute to change the cycle of clandestine abortion and (re) design harm reduction interventions on sexual and reproductive health care.
