Abstract:

This study analyzes the access to health care for women incarcerated in the state of Ceará, tracking common mental disorders. Analytical, cross-sectional, quantitative study, developed in the only female penitentiary in Ceará. 90 detainees participated, all with one of the following health issues: pregnant women, recent mothers, patients with systemic arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, tuberculosis, syphilis, hepatitis B or HIV/AIDS. Data were collected through structured interviews. Limited access to health care for the detainees was evidenced, violating basic rights when under the tutelage of the State. Limitations of screening tests for diseases in prisoners were found when they entered prison, especially in those who were not pregnant at the time of incarceration. There were differences between the different health conditions analyzed, with priority given to pregnant and postpartum women. 68.24% of the inmates were at risk for Common Mental Disorders (SRQ>7). There was a positive correlation between age and mental health (p=0.0002). Although there is relevant legislation guaranteeing access to healthcare in prison, the prison system is unprepared to meet the needs of people with comorbidities, pregnant and puerperal women, leaving them susceptible to the development/worsening of infectious diseases and difficulties in accessing medication.
