Abstract:

The goal was to evaluate access and factors associated to dental consultations among children aged up to 5 years old in the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil. A cross-sectional study was conducted at 10 Basic Health Units using a questionnaire and clinical examination in 560 children. Assessments were made of clinical variables (visible plaque, gingival bleeding and dmfs), social demographics and access to consultations. Poisson Regression was used to calculate the Prevalence Ratios (PR), with a confidence interval of 95%. Results show that 68.2% of children had never visited a dentist. The main reason stated for not attending dental consultations was a sense of being unnecessary (48.7%) and difficulty in access to public health centers (15.8%). The reason for attending consultations was for prevention/check-ups (55.8%) and the locations most often cited were private dental practices (43.9%) and basic health units (39.5%). In the final multivariate model, the age of the child (CI95%, PR=1.03 (1.02-1.05)), family income (PR=1.05; (1.01-1.08)) and the mother’s completion of secondary education (RP=1.69 (1.15-2.56)) were associated with seeking consultations. Thus, it is fundamental to recognize the importance of the family context during the early stage of life.
