Abstract:

External causes affect in different ways the human population. This article aims to analyze the emergency room care for women victims of accidents and violence. Data from the study Surveillance for Accidents and Violence were analyzed. This study was carried out at 74 emergency units of 23 states capitals and Distrito Federal in 2009 and included 6965 women aged from 20-59 years. Age groups 20-39 and 40-59 years were compared for the occurrence of accidents and violence. Accidents were more frequent in young women (20-39 years), black and with more than nine years of schooling. The occurrence of violence was also prevalent in young women and black but with less schooling. Among accidents falls were the most frequent (38,6%), followed by transport accidents. Violence occurrence was more frequent at home (p <0.000) and the reference to alcohol use predominated among victims of violence. The more frequent type of violence was aggression (84.6%), being the male aggressor (79.1%) and identified as an intimate partner (44.1%). It is important that services are able to provide comprehensive and human care to the victims of this important public health problem.
