Abstract:

ABSTRACT. Objective: To analyze the trend of morbidity and mortalityfalls in the elderly in Brazil1996 to 2012. Methods: ecological study of the trend of hospitalization and mortality rates for falls in the elderly by sex, by Brazilian regions and state capitals, with datathe Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System (SIH-SUS) and the Mortality Information System (SIM). The trend analyzes were performed according to polynomial regression models. Results: Mortality rates increased in all regions and in state capitals, to the hospital there was a change of trend in rates in the regions and in the country‘s capital. The rates ranged2.58 to 41.37 hospitalizations per 10,000 older adults in 1996 and 2012 respectively, and mortality rates increased1.25 in 1996 to 3.75 in 2012 for 10,000 seniors. Throughout the period, the highest mortality rates were observed for males. Conclusion: There was an increase in mortality and hospitalization rates for falls in the elderly in Brazil, with variations in relation to sex, and also the second State of residence. The results of this study and monitor the grievance on time can help the planning of technological and human resources for prevention and control of this disease.
