Abstract:

Objective: To compare knowledge on aids of male elderly and young adults, considering scholarship. Method: Within an epidemiological, descriptive, cross sectional study, the informations of 30 elderly and 62 young adults, concerning to definition, transmission, prevention, diagnosis and treatment for aids were investigated by an structured interview based on a standardized and validated questionnaire. For contingency and variance analyzes, frequency distributions, Qui squared test or exact Fisher test, as well as t Student test or Mann-Whitney test were used, with significance level of 0.05. Mantel-Haenszel test with significance level of 0.05 and Odds Ratio with 95% confidence intervals were used to determine scholarship influence. Results: One could identify individual perception of good health major for young adults (61.3% vs 43.3% for elderly) and major sexual activity for elderly (80% vs 62.9% of young adults). Nevertheless, less frequently elderly declared satisfactory knowledge on aids (26.7% vs 80.6% of young adults); previous HIV test (13.3% vs 24.2% of young adults) and orientation on aids (36.7% vs 98.4% of young adults). Conclusion: Elderly had insufficient information on HIV/aids, when compared to young adults, reinforcing the necessity to drive more attention to elder population.
