Abstract:

The objective was to analyze alcohol abuse in elderly people with type 2 diabetes mellitus in primary health care. This is a cross-sectional study with household data collection, carried outMarch to October 2018, in the Family Health Strategy in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo. Data were obtained through face-to-face interviews with the application of a form. The pattern of alcohol consumption was estimated using the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-C. A total of 338 elderly people with type 2 diabetes mellitus participated, of which 19.2% (95%CI 15.0-23.4) consumed alcohol abusively. Among them, there was a higher frequency of males (63.1%), aged between 60 and 64 years (35.4%), economic class C (49.2%), schooling1 to 4 years (53 .8%) and multimorbidity (92.3%). There was a negative association between alcohol abuse and adherence to pharmacotherapy (PR=0.55; 95%CI 0.36-0.86). The frequency of alcohol abuse, as well as non-adherence to drug treatment among those with a high consumption pattern is worrying, since it can lead to complications of diabetes. Therefore, the importance of multidimensional care of the elderly and health education in primary care.
