Abstract:
Objective: To analyze the relationship between alcohol consumption and abdominal obesity in participants of the ELSA-Brasil cohort after 9 years of follow-up.Methods: Longitudinal analysis performed with baseline and follow-up datathe ELSA-Brasil. In the baseline, 15,105 civil servants were enrolled. After exclusions, the final sample consisted of 3,591 participants. Anthropometric and lifestyle data were collected. Abdominal obesity was diagnosed, according to the World Health Organization. T-test and chi-square test were used, and crude and adjusted Poisson models were tested.
Results: More than 70% of the sample reported alcohol use. In 9 years, an increase in abdominal obesity and alcohol consumption was observed among men and women. A total of 1,588 new cases of abdominal obesity were identified. Higher consumption of alcoholic beverages increased the risk of abdominal obesity in men (1.15, 95%CI 1.01 - 1.31, p < 0.001).
Conclusion: In 9 years of follow-up, the highest risk of abdominal obesity was observed only in men who increased their alcohol consumption.
