Abstract:

Background: in Brazil, the use of amphetamines is commonly reported among truck drivers, which may be an important factor for the occurrence of traffic accidents. Objectives: to estimate the prevalence of amphetamine use among truck drivers. Methods: drivers (N=134) were stopped in two different roads in Sao Paulo state and they were asked to answer a questionnaire and provide a urine sample for toxicological analysis. All data were analyzed on Stata 8.0. Results: all participants were low schooling males, whose mean age was 40.8 years. The presence of amphetamines was detected in 10.8% of all collected urine samples, being commonly justified in order to make possible to truck drivers to keep their state of awareness. Discussion: amphetamine use was detected among truck drivers in Sao Paulo roads. Worrisome is that when the amphetamine stimulant effects are over, the sleepiness-related to sleep deprivation reduces the attention functioning and the driver performance, making drivers vulnerable to traffic accidents and their related costs.
