Abstract:

Object: This article examines the pertinence of the concept of medicalization for socio-cultural analysis. We start from the critiques to the concept, which emerged in the 2000s. Those critiques highlight the excessive broadness of a notion that encompasses different domains and thereby loses its analytic accuracy. Aims: we will examine the main meanings of the concept of medicalization, such as 1) the massive strategies of hygienization of populations; 2) the transformation of deviant behaviors in disorders; 3) control strategies and medical imperialism; 40 the participation of non-medical actors. Conclusions: Starting from the different meanings of the notion of medicalization we state the transitivity of the notion, i.e. the need of specify the different meanings attributed to the notion according to the different contexts in which it is used. Otherwise the concept will lose its theoretical accuracy and will therefore no longer be useful for social analysis.
