Abstract:

Objective: To analyze the information about breast self-examination available in the internet. Methods: A descriptive documental study. Was performed a search in the Web sites Google® and Yahoo®, using the descriptor “breast self-examination” in Portuguese, and the 50 first results from each site. Results: From 100 initial sites, 68 were able to be analyzed. The most sites were commercials, six were governmental sites and five were Portuguese sites. The most sites have restrictions about authority; 61 % did not have mode of contact to the internet user´s and 52,59% considered the breast self-examination part of an approach; 26,47 have evidence-based content, correct and complete; 33,82% have references. Apparently credible websites, like governmental or medical, have content or presentation with restrictions. Conclusions: there is heterogeneous information about breast self-examination. Only a small number of websites had worry about the quality criteria for the construction and content. The most information are not evidence-based and there are potentially dangerous information to the patient. It is necessary improve the quality of websites about breast self-examination.
