Abstract:

Leptospirosis is a worldwide zoonosis whose transmission is connected by multiple factors in the man-animal-ecosystem interface. The objective of this study was to evaluate the risk factors for the occurrence of infection with Leptospira in dogs in the capital Teresina (PI), and to determine its spatial distribution. Blood sample of 558 dogs were submitted to Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT). Applied semi-structured questionnaires for owners of dogs and obtained the area of residence for its projection in geographical maps was applied. The soroprevalence was 13.8% in which the most common serovar was Icterohaemorrhagiae, with 49.2%. There was a higher number of seropositive dogs in the rainy season (January to May) with 87.1% and is considered a risk factor for the occurrence of cases. Here were still considered to be risk factors the dogs with access to the street, the non-recall of food bowl and low income the owners. The distribution of seropositive dogs in the city appeared in a dispersed form, with predominance of cases in anthropic areas. It is concluded that these risk factors favor the infection of dogs that are agent maintenance sources in the city and reinforce the need for epidemiological and environmental surveillance in preventing leptospirosis.
