The purpose of this study was to evaluate which antropometric indicator exerts greater relation with the metabolic abnormalities in participants of a life change program. Based on an exploratory, transversal and analytical design, this survey Methods: We assessed the body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), % body fat (%BF) and muscle mass (%MM) of 273 adults and elderly subjects (older than 40 years). Fasting blood samples were obtained to assess total cholesterol, high-density cholesterol, low-density cholesterol, triacilglycerol and glucose. Statistical analyses for differentiation between the groups and determination of associations had been carried through. The level of significance was set at p<0,05. When one considered metabolic abnormalities as dependent variable and BMI, WC, %BF, %MM as independent variables, we observed that WC was the antropometric indicator that show the better association with all metabolic abnormalities (P<0,0001), followed by %MM. It is concluded that the metabolic abnormalities frequently related to obesity present as main marker of anthropometric indicator the WC and not BMI. For the same WC value, overweight and obese individuals showed healthy risks compared to eutrofic ones.Key Words: body composition, obesity, waist circumference, body mass index.
