Abstract:

Hematopoietic Stem Cells Transplantation (HSCT) is a treatment indicated for onco-hematological diseases. This is a complex procedure, that involves life-threatening. The patient, who has suffered the psychosocial impact of a diagnosis of a potentially fatal disease, finds himself overwhelmed with decision making, accepting or not the indication of HSCT. The literature shows that anticipatory grief can install in this moment of threat to the integrity of life. The aim of this study was to understand how the process of anticipatory grief settles in patients undergoing HSCT. We conducted a cross-sectional clinical-qualitative study. The sample consisted of 17 patients, mostly women, married, aged between 20 and 42 years and diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia. Semi-structured interviews were used to data collection. The content of audio recorded interviews was transcribed and subjected to thematic content analysis. The results indicate that the loss of health imposes a new challenge in a life story already permeated by great hardships and premature losses. It was found that the expected reactions against normal grief were expressed by the participants and that the privileged coping strategy was the attachment to faith. Future plans involve achieve healing, return to normality and vocational rehabilitation. The results may help the multidisciplinary teams to understand the emotional implications of the illness/treatment for implementing both preventive and interventional strategies. It is extremely important that staff be attentive to how to communicate the diagnosis and the possibility of drawing a therapeutic plan, in order to keep alive the fighting spirit of the patient and strengthen the bond of trust with health professionals.
