Abstract:

This study assessed medical students who use antidepressants, degree of adherence and drug-related knowledge and opinions about the importance of guidance in treatment. It is a cross-sectional descriptive study, carried out in a public Medical School in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Of the 289 students interviewed, 33 (11.4%) use or have already used antidepressants, being the fluoxetine the most prescribed. Nurse was not named as responsible for guidance on antidepressant. Although most students have received guidance on antidepressant, they did not adhere to treatment, having still doubts regarding how to use it. There was a statistically significant association regarding consumption of other drugs and side-effects presence; and increase of the dosage without medical consultation and presence of these effects. Actions are necessary for the valuating of the teaching of psychopharmacology in the formation of medical professional and for greater articulation between theory and practice.
