Abstract:

This paper aims to apply the DPSEEA model (WHO) to identify major health risks to rural workers and the environment associated with the intensive use of pesticides in Rio de Janeiro State, through an analysis of official documents and literature review (national and international). It emphasizes the two main branches of state’s agriculture: family farming in Região Serrana and the monoculture of sugar cane in Norte Fluminense. Results show that most of the determinants identified in the DPSEEA Matrix are related to monitoring and surveillance deficiencies of pesticide use, as well as a lack of technical assistance provided by the Public sector in Rio de Janeiro State. Most of the actions developed in the state addresses the effects of pesticide exposure and, to a lesser extent, exposure to these chemicals, not focusing on the uppermost levels of the matrix (as the driving forces and pressure), which are considered, by several authors, as the most appropriate when dealing with complex and systemic issues as this paper’s subject. Through this study, we sought to enable the application of DPSEEA Model for environmental and occupational health surveillance initiatives.
