Abstract:

The objective of this study was to evaluate the associated factors with the perceived discrimination among health care users in Brazil. It was a household-based nationwide cross-sectional survey (World Health Survey - Brazil, 2013), comprising a three stage complex sample, having 62,202 respondents over 18 years old. The outcome was the discrimination by any physician or health care worker perceived by the individual that sought for health care. A logistic regression model was adjusted for potential confounders. Perceived discrimination at health care was reported by 10.6% of the population, and lack of money (5.7%) and social class (5.6%) were the most frequent discrimination reported. The adjusted model revealed that women, people with lower educational level, non-white, and without private health care insurance, had higher chances to report discrimination by physicians or other health care workers. In conclusion, one tenth of Brazilian population declared that they felt discriminated by physicians and health care workers, revealing the need to reinforce Brazilian laws that state universal and equal access to health care system without any source of discrimination, both in private and public sectors.
