Abstract:

The social capital, whose theory seeks to explain social inequality in health through the interactions of social, economic and environmental factors, has been linked to many health hazards, but there is still little research on the area of oral health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association among social capital, socio-demographic and behavioral factors related to oral health among schoolchildren from 15 to 19 years old. A random sample of 1.417 adolescents have answered a self-administered survey, and data were descriptivelyanalyzed (simple frequencies, measures of central tendency and measures of variability) and inferential statistics (Chi-square test). The results showed that the social capital which is more prevalent among adolescents was the intermediate level (52,4%), as well as among each of its dimensions, exceptby social action where the majority (39,4%) were classified as low-leveled. Among the variables analyzed, the social capital was only statistically associated with sex, with women showing greater chance of being classified underthe ‘low social capital’ label. Such area still needs a lot of research to widen theoretical-conceptual and methodological framework in order to better understand the social contexts which are essential for formulating effective public health policies.
