Abstract:

The objective of this study is to identify researches that associated cognition and handgrip strength in older adults. This is a bibliographic review, based on integrative approach, of articles published in the last five years, indexed in PubMed, LILACS, SCOPUS database. Inclusion criteria were: observational or experimental studies, with a sample of elderly (aged 60 years or more); assessment of muscle strength through dynamometry; who had at least one cognitive assessment instrument. At the end of the search we selected 10 articles, featured as the sample, cognitive function and statistical results. It was observed that most of the researches were conducted in elderly aged over 75 years and we identified the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) as scale most commonly used for global cognitive assessment. We identified significant association between cognition changes and reduction of handgrip strength (HGS) in 90% of articles in this review. Results of this review suggest the influence in the cognitive impairment in elderly muscular strength, and thus can affect aspects of their functional capacity, and consequent dependence.
