Abstract:

We aimed to assess the association of parental supervision with sedentary behavior and physical inactivity among Brazilian adolescents. We used datathe Brazilian National Survey of School Health (PeNSE) 2015, of 102.072 students attending 9th gradepublic and private school. Adolescents were sedentary and physical inactive when they spent ≥3 hours/day sitting and practiced less then 60min/day of physical activity, respectively. Frequency of parental supervision (never, sometimes, always) was assessed through checking school homework, knowledge about what the adolescent do on free time, understanding problems and tinkering with the teenager\'s belongings. We ran logistic regression models, adjusted for sociodemographic variables. Among the adolescents, 56.3% were sedentary and 78.1% inactive. Checking school homework was associated with lower odds of physical inactivity (OR=0.70,95%CI=0.65-0.76) and sedentary behavior (OR=0.61, 95%CI=0.57-0.65). Those whose parents were aware of what they did during free time (OR =0.82,95%CI=0.74-0.91) and tinkered with their belongings (OR=0.78,95%CI=0.72-0,84) were less likely to be physical inactive. The understanding of problems by parents was associated with less odds of sedentary behavior (OR=0.72,95%CI=0.67-0.78). Greater parental supervision is associated with less physical inactivity and less sedentary behavior.
