Abstract:

Objective: To evaluate the association between racial residential segregation and homicide mortality in Minas Gerais (MG). Methods: Ecological study, with the cities of MG as units of analysis. The outcome was homicide deaths2008 to 2012 and the exposure was the measure of residential segregation index of racial interaction, estimated for 2010 based on demographic census; other covariables were average income per capita and the Gini index. The variables were presented in thematic maps and the association between them was investigated by bayesian hierarchical models. Results: There was a negative association between the racial interaction index and homicide mortality (coefficient = -1,787; 95%CI = -2,459; -1,119), in a model adjusted for per capita income. Conclusions: MG cities with greater racial interaction had, on average, a lower mortalityhomicides.
