Abstract:

Muscle strength is required to perform daily activities, and is considered global health marker. The aim of this study was to identify sociodemographic factors and related lifestyle to lower handgrip strength levels (HGS) in adults and young people aged. This cross-sectional study of population-based was conducted with 705 individuals 25-65 years of age in the city of Florianópolis, SC, Brazil. The HGS was assessed by manual dynamometry. The socio-demographic and lifestyle data were collected by interview. It is used multiple linear regression to identify the predictors of HGS Women and older age individuals were the factors associated with lower values of HGS. Also, being active in leisure time was associated with higher levels of HGS. Interventions aiming at maintaining HGS levels in individuals should consider aging and those inactive and insufficiently active physically during leisure time.
