Abstract:

This study addresses the relationship between socioeconomic status (income), maternal depression and child health in Brazil, using the 2008 National Household Sample Survey (PNAD/IBGE). The analysis was adjusted for the sampling design and included data on 46,874 children up to 9 years old. Poisson models were estimated for three child health outcomes: parent-reported health status, limited daily activity, and days spent in bed in the past 14 days. The results showed associations between mother‘s depression and the three child health outcomes, even after adjustment for socioeconomic status, mother‘s self-reported health status, age, education and smoking status, child‘s age, sex and ethnicity, regions of the country, urban/rural area, and number of household members. The relationship between maternal depression and child health is independent of socioeconomic status. Therefore, public health policies that aim to mitigate adverse effects of maternal depression on child health also need to consider that stratum of society.
