Abstract:

The aim was to analyze the relationship of the internalisation of body patterns and depressive symptoms with restriction eating in male adolescents. Participated 383 male adolescents aged among 12 and 17 years. We used the subscales "Overalll Internalization" and "Athletic Internalization" of the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-3 (SATAQ-3) to assess the internalization of body patterns. Major Depression Inventory (MDI) was used to analyze the depressive symptoms. The subscale "Diet" of the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT- 26) was used to assess restriction eating. The findings of the logistic regression indicated 2,01 times more likely for adolescents with high overall internalization adopt restriction eating (Wald=6,16; p=0,01) compared to those with low overall internalization. Moreover, the regression model showed no significant association of "athletic Internalization" (Wald=1,16; p=0,23) and depressive symptoms (Wald=0,81; p=0,35) with the eating restriction. The results showed that only the overall internalization was related to eating restriction in young males.
