Abstract:
The present study aimed to investigate the association between ASD and maternal and paternal use of medications, tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs. It is a case-control study conducted with children and adolescents diagnosed with ASD and neurotypical individuals.Data were collected through interviews with mothers or guardians. The following variables were analyzed: sex and age of children/adolescents; parents' age; use of medication before and during pregnancy; classes of drugs used during pregnancy; maternal and paternal smoking; maternal and paternal alcoholism; use of illicit drugs by parents. Logistic regression model was used to analyze the information, in addition to crude and adjusted odds ratio (OR). The results showed association between ASD and maternal use of antipyretics/analgesics (OR=2.48; CI95% 1.52-4.06; p<0.001) and antibiotics (OR=1.98; CI95% 1.15-3.43; p<0.014) before and during pregnancy, in the crude analysis. However, maternal and paternal use of tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs before and during pregnancy showed no association with ASD. The data found suggest that there is influence of environmental factors on the development of ASD.
