Abstract:

This article presents some of the meanings that bad news takes on as they are transmitted by health professionals to supporting family members of young cystic fibrosis patients undergoing treatment at a public hospital located in the south zone district of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is the result of the research and analysis of ten narratives collected during two months in 2010. These meanings are not well known by medical professionals and greatly interfere in the coexistence and coping with the evolution of the illness, as well as the care given to patients by familiars. It has been observed that the content of the news is perceived differently according to: The clarity with which it is transmitted to each family member; The forthright way it is conveyed without the preparation of the listener; The consideration of the context in which people live and the role this plays in the assistance made available to this patient; The presence of an additional supporting person in the moment the news is delivered; The fragmentation of information. Results indicate the need to sensitize professionals on communication aspects involved in clinical meetings and the inclusion of this capacitating process in the graduation period as well as along professional activity.
