Abstract:

The study revealed beliefs and behaviors related to the causes and control measures of coronary artery disease (CAD). One hundred adults were interviewed in a public clinic, in Salvador/BA. The results were analyzed in percentages, averages and through the content analysis technique. Predominance was for men, age <60 years, black, low levels of schooling and income, married and unemployed. The average beliefs on the cause of CAD was of 1,53 per participant including behavioral, biological, relational and religious factors, and represent an accumulation of excesses related to the day-to-day tensions and eating habits. Most of the participants did not consider the disease as being chronic, believing that the treatment would not last their whole lives and that they would be cured. The average beliefs for control measures were of 1.45, prevailing dietary approaches and use of medication. Predominance was for sedentary lifestyle, reduction in smoking and drinking, using less salt and saturated fat in the preparation of meals, consuming more white meat, cooked and industrialized food. Only 66% followed medical prescriptions. The unsatisfactory understanding on the causes and control measures of CAD makes the implementation of medical care contemplating the different living and health conditions and projected towards caring for oneself.
