Abstract:

A systematic review on Prison Health scientific production was made, aiming at verifying how the subject matter has been dealt, identifying which is the most explored focus and pointing possible gaps. The search was carried out on Health Virtual Library. 1160 articles were found: 1104 on MEDLINE, 19 on LILACS and 37 on SciELO, published from 1993 to 2010. As MEDLINE and LILACS do not show the articles entirely, the places, dates and languages of the texts were put down in a sort of map. Deep analysis were delimited by works which texts were freely and completely shown and hosted by SciELO. The fact that scientific production is present all over the world was pointed out, showing quantitative approach predominance, focused on socio-demographic profile identification and prisoners health conditions: tuberculosis incidence, Human Immunodeficiency and Hepatitis C viruses’ infection. There’s a predominance of studies carried out with male prisoners, in comparison to female ones. It is noticed that prisoner’s health is an emergent public health problem, which demands researches that can guide health politics and strategies.
