Abstract:

This study aimed to evaluate the body composition of the Khisêdjê, an indigenous people resident at Xingu Indigenous Territory, and compare it to the results obtained by anthropometry. 179 individuals of both sexes were included. Body mass index (BMI) was classified by recommendations of WHO (1995). The body composition was identified using measures derived directlybioelectrical impedance device (resistance - R, reactance - Xc and phase angle - AF). Data were analyzed using the Student t-test, chi-square, Pearson correlation and analysis of variance. 57,0% of the sample was male. The average age of the population was 37·5 years. 48·0% of subjects had some degree of overweight (BMI ≥25,0 kg/m2). A positive correlation between BMI with circumference measurements of waist (WC) and arm (AC) and AF and an inverse correlation between BMI with measures of R and Xc were found. The average values of R and Xc decreased with BMI increasing; in contrast, the AF average increased with BMI increasing. The overweight found among the Khisêdjê is possibly related to the greatest amount of muscle mass.
