Abstract:

The body image of pregnant women should receive attention from health professionals, with a view to promoting maternal and child health. The purpose of this integrative review was to analyze the literature in image and body dissatisfaction during pregnancy. The review covered articles published in Scopus, PubMed, BVS and PsycINFO crossing "pregnancy" with the keywords: "body image" and "body dissatisfaction". After the adoption of inclusion and exclusion criteria 40 studies were analyzed. The data are inconclusive about body dissatisfaction during pregnancy. Presence of depressive symptoms, low self-esteem, inadequate eating attitude and weight gain outside the recommended limits have been associated with a negative body image. Contradictions in findings may be related to differences in the instruments used to measure body image. Because of the possible impact of a negative body image during pregnancy on maternal and child health, more investigations are recommended, especially the development of an assessment tool specific body image during pregnancy.
